Vaupes the most isolated department (state) of Colombia, that makes it a unique place due to its high level of conservation, great biodiversity and authenticity of the indigenous tribes living there. During this expedition you can visit several indigenous communities that still maintain most of its culture and their traditions. In order to have this kind of contacts, we will get all the previous consultation and proper preparation for visiting these indigenous tribes.
This is a full expedition through all the Vaupés department, where you will visit different indigenous communities, first navigating the Vaupés river getting to the Raudal of Yuruparí, then heading south and trekking 2 days in order to get to the Cananary river where you will the Morocco Tepuy, and the marvelous and enigmatic Raudal del Jirijirimo which has the most powerful river rapids of Colombia at the Apaporis river.
(05:00) – Meeting in Bogotá and departure towards San José del Guaviare city by private van or ground transportation, which will take 6 hours approximately. Once we get to S.J. del Guaviare we will have lunch and will check in at our chosen hotel. In the afternoon we will visit and appreciate the sunset at Laguna Negra (Black lagoon) and then will head back to the town where we will have the last chances to get provisions and supplies for the jungle expedition. Lastly, we will have dinner and then accommodation in our hotel.
(05:30) – Breakfast and check-out, then we will get to the S.J. del Guaviare Airport where we will take a cargo/passenger’s flight towards Carurú (a village located in the northern Vaupés). Once there, we will have lunch and will take a fluvial trip on the Vaupés river towards the community of Yuruparí, where we will spend the night. Once there we will set our hammocks inside a “Maloka” (traditional indigenous meeting house). In the afternoon we will visit the majestic Raudal del Yuruparí (which is a wide powerful Vaupés river rapid). Then at night we will have dinner prepared by the indigenous and will rest.
(06:00) – Breakfast at the maloca and afterwards a fluvial transportation in boats by the Vaupés river and then entering the Tuy creek where we will get to Bellavista del Tuy village, having lunch there. Then we will start a trek towards the Cananary river (with a distance of 18 km maximum depending on the river levels and season) having indigenous porters carrying our backpacks, doing the first part in this day and finding a spot in the jungle to set a campsite outdoors dinner with the help of the indigenous people trekking with us.
(06:00) – Breakfast at the camp-site and then start of the trek towards San José de Cananari (this will be a challenging hike depending on the weather and the jungle conditions due to the distance). Depending on the pass we will have lunch on the way or once we arrive to the village. In the afternoon we will head by boats towards Altamira indigenous village where we will set our campsite and will sleep in hammocks inside traditional malokas in the indigenous tribe, having free time to share with them and get to know more about their way of life and cosmovision.
(07:00) – Breakfast at the indigenous community and then transportation in boats on the Cananary river towards the indigenous community of Morroco, where we will have lunch and will prepare in order to ascent the Morroco tepuy. We will start the trek towards the Tepuy (kind of mountains only found in the Amazon jungle), where we will find the best spot to spend the night in an outdoors camp-site in the middle of the jungle where we will prepare the dinner and will rest for the next day.
(06:00) – Breakfast and then beginning of the climb towards the top of the Morroco Tepuy where we will aim to get till the rock-art paintings at the top of this Tepuy. Once there, you will have free time to admire this majestic place before heading to another gorgeous spot: La Ventana al mundo (The window to the world) where you will have a great view of the vast Amazon jungle. After sometime there, you will have lunch and then will start the trek back to the community of Morroco, where we will take the boats towards the indigenous community of Buenos Aires, spending the night and having dinner there.
(07:00) – Breakfast and farewell with the authorities of the Buenos Aires Community where we will start a boat ride towards the wonderful Apaporis river witnessing the magnificent Raudal del Jirijirimo. This is the most sacred place for the indigenous tribes of the area being an inspiration for several legends and having probably the most spectacular and powerful waterfall of Colombia. After this place we will have lunch and then will continue the boat ride upstream towards La Victoria (Amazonas Province), where we will set a campsite with hammocks in the local school, where we will also have dinner.
(07:00) – Breakfast at the local school in La Victoria (Amazonas province) where we will wait for the cargo/passengers’ plane that will take us to San José del Guaviare. On the plane we will pass by vast well-preserved Amazon territories until we land to Guaviare where we will have lunch and then will take the ground transportation that will take us to Bogotá. Approximately we will arrive to Bogotá at 23:00 hrs.
