This area is the second largest arid zone of the country, being technically a Tropical dry forest of more than 330 km2 located in the department of Huila. This place is characterized by orange, grey and ash colours in different parts of the whole area. As it´s far from big cities, there is few light pollution and it is perfect for stargazing, also offering nice hikes and even pools with natural water extracted from the ground.
➡ Option of transportation in flights Bogota-Neiva (1 or both ways) using EasyFly or Avianca airlines. *(For this option we ask to reserve in advance, at least 15 days preferably in order to check flight availability and guarantee reasonable airfares).
➡ Option of private accomodation for couples or families with private toilets and showers for an extra price.
➡ Option to do a horse-back riding in the desert (20.000 COP per hour).
(06:00) – DAY 0 (22:45) – Meeting for the departure from Bogota to the desert in private Car/Van/bus.
(05:30) – Arrival & breakfast in the town of Villavieja, after that visit of the paleontological museum, “Totumo” museum & tour in the town; then a ride in the transportation to the desert where we will start doing a Hike through the Cuzco Sector (Red Desert). Once the hike is over we will get to our hotel where we will do the check-in, accomodate depending on the option previosly chosen and will have lunch at noon. After lunch we will have a time to rest & enjoy the pool at the hotel and then prepare to do the hike of “Valle de los Xilópalos” in the late afternoon. At night we will enjoy our dinner and then we will head to the observatory to have the talk & stargazing with an expert astronomer.
(07:00) Breakfast and after that departure in our transportation to get to and spot called “Los Hoyos”, once there we will start the last hike on the grey part of the desert, once it is over we will head back to the hotel where we will have the chance to have an spare time in the pool or take a horse-back riding (optional for an extra cost) till 1 pm, where we will take our transportation to Villavieja town and will have lunch there. After lunch we will cross the Magdalena river by boat and will head to the town of Aipe in a short hike of 2 Kms where our transportation will pick us up and will take us to Bogota with an estimated arrival there at 22:00 hrs.
