Tierradentro (that means underground in Spanish) is an area with special archeological interest due to its well-known tombs that were declared world heritage sites in 1995 as it is an important destination of ancient pre-Columbian cultures. This place is located in the Cauca department (state) at the rural area of the municipalities of Inzá and Belalcazar having vestiges of the tombs of a civilization that started to flourish around 200 BC in the mountains of southwest Colombia.
The Tierradentro culture is particularly well known for its dense collection of elaborated pre-Columbian hypogea. The area is located 100 Km away from Popayán, in the middle of the Andean mountains with spectacular views and landscapes where you can enjoy a good cup of coffee or just disconnect in an isolated place while discovering all its archeological sites.
(08:00) – Meeting in the city of Popayán and departure in private transportation towards the municipality of Inzá in a 3,5 hours ride through the Andean mountains, once there you will check into the hotel, will have lunch and will enjoy the first moments at Tierradentro region. In the afternoon you will visit the national archeological park of Tierradentro, which is a complex where you can see the first Hypogea in a short-guided walk, ending the afternoon you will enjoy the sunset with a good cup of coffee and will get to the hotel, having dinner there.
(07:00) Breakfast and after that a tour in the private transportation to several sites, visiting different hypogea sites such as Segovia, El Duende, Avocado and Tablón hills and having a typical lunch. On this day you will also visit small villages where you will see old churches, buildings and marvelous landscapes at the heart of the Colombian Andes. This is a sparsely inhabited area where you can relax, taste products of local farmers and at the end of the afternoon you will be taken back the hotel where you will have dinner and rest.
08:00) Breakfast and after that you will be taken to an indigenous territory where you will live a close contact and experience with indigenous people of Nasa community having a glimpse of their culture and traditions. After that you will be taken to the pyramid of San Francisco which is located on top of a mountain and has an amazing view of the whole area. Afterwards you will have lunch and then will be taken back to Popayán.
